Town were held to a goalless draw for the second league game in succession as MK Dons claimed a point in horrendous conditions at Weston Park on Sunday.
With strong winds and an atrocious looking surface, it was evident from the early stages of the game that it was going to be an ugly scrap for valuable league points. Town had the first chance of the game after just four minutes as Paige Peake whipped a free-kick towards goal but Chloe Sansom was able to push the ball around the post. Anna Grey was proving to be a decent outlet for Town on the left-hand side but crossing was proving to be tricky in worsening conditions. The two sides continued to battle hard for the remainder of the first-half but neither goalkeeper was called into action, with play primarily remaining in the middle of the pitch.
Both sides looked to gain a foothold after the break but neither were able to do so. Bonnie Horwood had the first shot of the half just shy of the hour-mark but her strike from just outside the area caught the wind and flew over the bar. Moments later, Kyra Robertson fed the ball into the path of Zoe Barratt, but she fired her shot straight at Sansom. As the game entered it's latter stages, it became evident that neither side were looking likely to score and the hosts subsequently looked to protect a hard-fought point.
Substitute Sarah Brasero-Carreira would have a chance to net a late winner but dragged her shot wide after racing on to Summer Hughes' through-ball. Shortly after, Natasha Thomas fired a shot wide from just outside the area. The game eventually petered out with the two sides sharing the points in a largely uneventful encounter.
Town remain top of the FAWNL Southern Premier Division ahead of this Sunday's trip to Crawley Wasps.
Town: Quantrill, Hughes, Peake, Egan, Lafayette, Grey (Hubbard), Horwood (c), Robertson (Brasero-Carreira), King (Smith), Barratt (Biggs), Thomas.
Unused; Hakes.
