Town have confirmed the appointment of Charlie Baxter as new assistant to Joe Sheehan.
The 31-year-old, who began work at Playford Road on Monday, succeeds Paige Shorten, who departed the club for a role at the FA back in October. Charlie has signed a contract until May 2022 and will oversee the Ipswich Town Girls ACC in addition to his primary role as assistant of the Tractor Girls' first-team and WSL Academy side.
Charlie began his coaching career 13 years ago and moved into the women's game in 2014. His first role was at West Bromwich Albion as an age group coach with the Baggies' former centre of excellence. After one season he moved on to Birmingham City and took on a number of roles within their academy. After progressing through the system he became first-team technical coach under Mark Skinner, where he worked with England internationals including Aoife Mannion, Lucy Staniforth and Ellen White. After Skinner's departure to Orlando Pride in January 2019, Charlie soon became first-team assistant under new manager Marta Tejedor, until her sacking in March 2020. Baxter was subsequently promoted to interim manager of Blues for the remainder of the Women's Super League season. Following the appointment of Carla Ward, Charlie spent a brief spell working under the former Sheffield United boss before leaving Birmingham City in September 2020.
Since departing Birmingham he had a brief stint with Cheltenham Town as a youth development phase coach before deciding to make the move to Suffolk. Away from the domestic game he's worked with the FA on a number of regional and national girls development programmes, where he previously coached current Tractor Girl Maria Boswell. Charlie also holds a Bachelors Honours degree in coaching and sports development, whilst also earning a Masters degree in sports coaching. Latterly he's been working towards securing his UEFA A-Licence.
On the appointment of his new assistant, Town boss Joe Sheehan said; " We are delighted to finally announce the appointment of Charlie as our new assistant. He has worked at the top level of the game and has contributed to the development of many high performing players that have come through Birmingham City over the last few years. I am looking forward to working with him and seeing the impact he will have on our players on the journey that we are on for many years to come."
Everyone at Ipswich Town would like to welcome Charlie to the club and wish him every success in his new role with the Tractor Girls.
